The EU Mission Ocean supports the blue curricula through the Horizon Programme: the ProBleu and SHORE projects will enhance the Network of European Blue Schools for next three years

Ocean literacy is a key of the Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development goals (UNESCO-IOC, 2021) promoting its implementation in formal education (Santoro, F. et. al. 2022). Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General, launched an open call (Bres 2022) “The international community must make education one of the pillars of its action for the ocean. Because if we want to protect it better, we must teach it better. On the occasion of the One Ocean Summit, I am setting a common objective for our 193 Member States: to include ocean education in school curricula by 2025”. In alignment the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030 aims to reach a good quality of marine and freshwater ecosystems that depends on ocean and water literacy factor, among others. The ProBleu and SHORE EU projects are supporting digital tools and the empowerment of youngsters, respectively, towards Network of European Blue Schools improvement. ProBleu is developing and offering a pool of innovative resources based on methodologies of Open Schooling. The whole educational community will be involved in projects of citizen science using validated digital platform and tools, encouraging engagement and opening up to the democratisation of science fostering critical thinking and the scientific mind-set through the interaction with the scientific community. While SHORE will engage & mobilise students, teachers,  and schools promoting country hubs and guidance for the educators and schools on Blue Curricula. Community activities such as exhibitions, workshops, training, seminars and awards about Ocean Ambassadors and Literate of the Year are tools for awareness of ocean literacy. Both projects are collaborating to increase the European Blue Schools supporting small grants for schools actions all over Europe and associated countries as well as promoting an international dialogue about the blue curricula in the framework of the UN Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona in April 2024
