Description

Resilience in the process of upbringing

In the chapter Resilience in the process of upbringing, the author proposes a reflection on the issue of resilience, in particular the family factor and its influence on the formation of resilience in children. First, as an introduction, the phenomenon of resilience is discussed, both as a personality trait and in a processual sense, including protective and risk factors, as well as mechanisms. It then outlines how the family system can reinforce and shape resilience in children, the importance of resilience in upbringing and education, and the concept of a resilient person. The aim of the chapter is to show how fundamental and a key educational task is to strengthen resilience in children, with a view to their optimal and multidirectional development, in an often difficult and complex reality. The mental well-being of children and adolescents is an extremely important issue that should be addressed interdisciplinarily.
Statistics on the mental health of young people are alarming, showing an increase in suicide attempts, depression, low sense of agency, lack of self-esteem and self-acceptance. It is worth reflecting on how to take care of the health of children and adolescents, and how to suport and shape positive resources, which is undoubtedly the phenomenon of resilience, understood as positive adaptation and good functioning despite experienced difficulties, stress or traumatic events. The considerations in the chapter are aimed at showing how multifaceted the phenomenon of resilience and related concepts are, and how the family and school environment are important factors in building resilience.
