Navigating Sustainable Astrotourism and Dark Sky Conservation in Cyprus
Description
Presented during the IAU356 symposium, Addis Ababa - Ethiopia, 13-17 Nov 2023
Abstract:
This is a journey through the celestial wonders of Cyprus, unveiling an extraordinary endeavor at the intersection of astronomy, sustainable tourism, and dark sky conservation. The presentation provides a transformative model for sustainable and responsible tourism management in Cyprus, all set against a backdrop of pristine celestial features, favorable weather conditions, and strategic geographical positioning.
This collaborative odyssey brought together a diverse coalition of stakeholders, including educators, researchers, technologists, astronomers, tourism experts, and sustainability advocates. Our shared mission was to craft captivating Astrotourism experiences while remaining steadfast in our commitment to sustainable principles and promoting the dark sky as a universal heritage. Guided by an extensive exploration of international best practices in Astrotourism, we meticulously adapted these global insights to harmonize with Cyprus' unique context. The result of this collective effort is a comprehensive sustainability framework, encompassing three pivotal Astrotourism activities: Astrocamps, Astroparks, and Astrovillages.
The presentation illuminates the holistic sustainability framework, offering a glimpse into its seamless integration and testing during the pilot phases of Astrotourism activities. Cyprus emerges as a beacon of promise, a living case study of how sustainable tourism management can transform regions while safeguarding the cosmos above.
This presentation is not only an invitation to explore the cosmic wonders of Cyprus but also a valuable resource for scientific communities involved in astronomy and space science, dark sky conservation citizen scientists and researchers, and stakeholders in the burgeoning field of Astrotourism who can be part of this transformative journey towards sustainable, responsible, and awe-inspiring tourism experiences.
The Research & Development Project Astrotourism is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation.
