THE TRADITIONAL POWER STRUCTURE OF AFRICAN SOCIETIES: A STUDY OF ANNANG TRADITIONAL SOCIETY

Description

The traditional African institutions and rulers are the repository and intermediaries of societal tradition, culture and religion, whose powers swathe the communities. However, the traditional power relations and institutions are threatened by royal abuses, pervasive power struggles, dictatorial leadership, government control and democratisation. This enunciated the study with three hundred respondents constituting the sample size, while questionnaire, simple percentage, Chi-square and Phi- coefficient were the data collection tool and statistical techniques. The study equally anchored on Structuration theory. It was found that there is a relationship between area of decision-making and the development, and that leadership categories are affected by frequent power tussle. Based on these findings, open-leadership structure, participatory governance is recommended.
