Compliance of fruits and vegetables with retail specifications, primarily in terms of aesthetic appeal in accordance with consumer standards, becomes one of the most pressing drivers of Food Loss and Waste, FLW. Almost a third of all fruit and vegetables produced in Europe are discarded each year due to their appearance. It is estimated that 51 million tonnes of ugly fruits and vegetables are wasted each year in Europe, mainly due to an overemphasis on aesthetic appearance as the primary quality standard for consumers.
In Spain, some companies are emerging with a business model based on taking advantage of production losses (surpluses that cannot be sold in the usual channels and imperfect products discarded by distribution).
