Description

Adithan I, the Chola king who conquered Kongunath in AD 894 and annexed it to his empire. This change of name appears to have taken place after the 14th year of Paranthakan I, an inscription of that year referring to the country as 'Kongu Nadu'. During the reign of Rajaraja I, who built the Thanjavur great temple, the country was renamed Adhiraja-Mandalam. During the reign of these kings, various successful projects of conquering and expanding the Chola Empire resulted in the renaming of regional divisions and countries. This is a grand temple with shrines of Kodumudinathar, Vaduduyammai and Perumal and Thayar. There are entrances to Kodumudinath, Ambal and Veeranarayana Perumal shrines. Kunchitapada Nataraja has raised his left foot and placed both feet on the ground. The sun's rays illuminate the shrine of Shiva and Ambal for days in the months of Panguni and Avani.
