Description

Polyodontotrochus extentapalaestrus, new species

(Figs. 9, 13, 17, 20, 29–34)

Diagnosis. Suprahumeral horns of pronotum large and broadly auriculate, apices rounded, directed laterally, in dorsal view attaining but not exceeding anteriorly beyond pronotal median carina, in anterior view lower than pronotal median carina, lateral carinae absent.

Description. Color. Head, legs and abdomen uniformly dark brown, pronotum with thin dorsolateral white line.

Head. Ratio of distance between inner margin of eye to outer edge of nearest ocellus 0.84 × distance between inner edges of ocelli, frontoclypeal sutures wider than tall; vertical or almost so; head in anterior view with postclypeus straight, ratio of head width between eyes to height along midline 2.2; vertex with weak rugae absent. Thorax. Pronotum. With broadly auriculate suprahumeral horns projecting anterolaterally, in lateral view lower than highest point of pronotal median carina, in dorsal view attaining but not exceeding anteriorly beyond most anterior part of metopidium (Fig. 14); median carina weakly elevated, in lateral view evenly rounded anteriorly then weakly sinuate in distal 2/3, lateral carinae absent. Forewing. Costal cell broad; vein R branched; vein R 4+5 pinched at point of fusion with R 2+3.; s crossvein present, short as a single point, distad of r-m; 2 m-cu crossveins. Legs. Prothoracic femora ventrally with strongly sclerotized studs in basal half, scattered, not in rows, without longitudinal ventral groove; prothoracic tibia ventrally with strongly sclerotized studs scattered in distal half, not in rows; mesothoracic trochanters with 2–5 strongly sclerotized studs; mesothoracic femora ventrally with strongly sclerotized studs in distal half, scattered, not in rows, without longitudinal ventral groove. Metathoracic leg as genus description. Abdomen. Male genitalia (Figs. 29–34). Subgenital plate distally subtriangular in ventral view; lateral plate of pygofer with semi-abrupt vertical ridge; aedeagus wider preapically in anterior view, in lateral view sinuate, with subapical bend; its ridges oriented horizontally.

Dimensions of male (mm). Length 7.3, maximum width (across suprahumeral horns) 6.0, height above humeral angles 1.6, ratio of length to width 1.2.

Material examined. ♂ Holotype (DZUP) with labels, “ GUYANE FRAÇAISE | Nouragues-Inselberg | 28-V-2013 | Pius S.E.A.G.”, and red holotype label “HOLOTYPE | Polyodontotrochus | extentapalaestrus | Gonzalez-Mozo & McKamey”.

Etymology. The specific name is a combination of the Latin “ extenta,” for oustretched, and “ palaestra,” for gymnast, in reference to the posture of the suprahumeral horns in anterior and dorsal views.
