Export barriers of the garments industry in Bangladesh

This case study is on the ‘barriers to the export of garments goods in Bangladesh’. This dissertation 
aims to identify the barriers that the garments’ industry faces to conduct their daily operations and 
export goods overseas. The focus of this research is to concentrate on techniques and concepts of 
the export garment industry in respect of the business scenario in Bangladesh. In this entire 
research, the researcher has tried to analyse the current position of the garment industry in 
Bangladesh and the challenges that are faced by the respective owners. In addition to this, the 
researcher has reviewed existing literature presented by other scholars relating to this topic to 
underpin theories and concepts which would help analyse the theory and draw a concurrent 
conclusion. Therefore, the researcher has used various theoretical tools and models to help gain a 
clear insight into this topic to substantiate the thesis.
Garments industry is under tremendous pressure and therefore this research aids in providing clear 
and essential recommendations to tackle and mitigate the issues at hand to be able to sustain in 
today’s competitive environment. To be able to carry out an effective research work the researcher 
has used positivism research philosophy, the inductive approach of research and descriptive 
research design for this case study. The researcher has carried out the primary investigation by 
taking the sample size of thirty garment owners among a selection of various organisations of 
Bangladesh.
Four managers were selected and interviewed for qualitative research purposes based on their 
experience and knowledge in the industry to ensure that the data have been compiled from learned 
individuals of the industry. During the interview process, the gestures and postures of the 
interviewees were considered to deduce and analyse the qualitative data effectively. The 
quantitative data has been represented in the graphical format along with details explanations of 
each figure.
The researcher observed that in the present scenario the condition of the export of garments has 
plateaued due to the several barriers pointed out in this research. These barriers need to be 
mitigated to rise above the competition and sustain to be able to attract customers. Therefore, the 
learner has recommended certain strategies so that all the challenges can be mitigated for economic 
development and sustainability.
