PHYT-ON Ontology-based project for phytolith science

Description

Phytoliths are plant microfossils used world-wide to address a variety of questions in a variety of fields like archaeology, palaeoecology and palaeontology. Diverse laboratory procedures, analyses and identification criteria are used resulting from different research traditions.

This project aims to improve the interoperability of phytolith data and metadata by implementing PHYT-ON, which is based on an ontology.

An ontology is a system for describing and managing relationships between concepts, groups of concepts and the relation between them. It is a formal representation of domain knowledge. It improves data management in specific domains, such as in phytolith research, using advances in information technology.

The outcomes expected from that project are:

  1. Overcome language and terminology barriers.
  2. Carry out sophisticated searches accross data.
  3. Overcome the edundancy and multiplicity issues.
  4. Enrich the interpretation of phytoliths and lead to the creation of new knowledge.
