Assessment of Perception and Attitude on English Studies Curriculum among Junior Secondary School Teachers in Ibadan South-West Local Government, Oyo State

Description

The study investigated assessment of perception and attitude on English Studies curriculum among junior secondary school teachers in Ibadan South-West Local Government, Oyo State. The study adopted the survey research design. Population of the study consists of all junior secondary school teachers in public junior secondary schools in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, Oyo State during the 2021/2022 academic session. Forty (17 Male and 23 Female) teachers constitute the sample size of the study. The sample size was selected using multi-stage sampling technique. Two research instruments were used for data collection: Teachers’ Perception of English Studies Curriculum Questionnaire (r=.76) and Questionnaire on Teachers’ Attitude to English Studies Curriculum (r=.80). Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of percentage, mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics of t-test. Findings of the study that there was a weighted mean of 2.84, which is greater than the threshold set at 2.50 and a weighted mean of 1.77, which is lower than the threshold set at 2.50. Also, there was a significant difference in the mean response scores of perceptions on English Studies curriculum among junior secondary school male and female teachers. So, the null hypothesis was accepted. There was no significant difference in the mean response scores of attitudes on English Studies Curriculum among Junior Secondary School male and female teachers. So, the null hypothesis was rejected. It could be concluded that the study has provided a better understanding of perception and attitude on English Studies curriculum among Junior Secondary School teachers in Ibadan South-West Local Government, Oyo State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that government should do everything possible to educate teachers of English Studies on reasons for English Studies Curriculum at Junior Secondary School level.
