El retablo en la Diócesis de Plasencia. Siglos XVII y XVIII

This work addresses for the first time, and from a global point of view, the development of the altarpiece during the Baroque period in the diocesan territory of Plasencia, which encompasses half of the province of Cáceres, along with the archpriestships of Béjar and Fuentes de Béjar and the territories north of the province of Badajoz. The study begins with an introductory chapter on the historical and geographical development of the territory, followed by chapters devoted to the clientele, the artist and his guild environment, and the altarpiece itself, examined from socio-cultural, structural, iconographic, and stylistic perspectives. The work also includes a detailed study of the master architects, assemblers, carvers, and sculptors who worked in Plasencia during the Baroque period, presenting their biographies and a catalog of their works, organized according to their origins. The aspects related to the polychromy of the pieces are also addressed, albeit more briefly. The book concludes with a chapter on the sources and bibliography, and incorporates indexes of maps, plates, and figures, as well as onomastic and toponymic indexes, essential for quick consultation of a study of this nature.
