Hot Stars with Cool Companions

Description
We present intermediate results of a spectroscopic survey for late K-M companions orbiting nearby A and B type stars. Such companions may have formed in the massive disk of the young primary star, and so may be scaled-up versions of brown dwarfs formed in the disks of less massive stars. In addition, the multiplicity of these bright and young A and B type stars is important to generate samples for adaptive optics planet searches. The method we use to search for companions has a uniform detection threshold for any companion within about 2-3", and so is complementary to ongoing imaging surveys. We find companion stars with a variety of masses, giving early indication that these companions do not form through gravitational disk instability, which would preferentially produce low-mass stars.
