Supplementary information for "Condensation mass sink and intensification of tropical storms"
Description
ebtrk_atlc_1988_2015.txt is the EBTRK version uploaded on July 27, 2016, see https://rammb2.cira.colostate.edu/research/tropical-cyclones/tc_extended_best_track_dataset/ Lines from 03437 till 11824 correspond to storms in 1998-2015, a total of 8387 records.
pre-wv-new-2023.zip contains 2x8387 files with TRMM precipitation distributions for those 8387 records.
For example, file pre-wv-new-04568.txt is for AL1200 HELENE 15 September 18:00 2000 from EBTRK. The file contains 70 lines corresponding to distance r_i =i*25 km from the storm center, where i is the line number, 25 km <= r_i <= 3000 km. Numbers in the first column are the local TRMM precipitation (mm/hour) averaged among the TRMM cells that are no more than r_i but not less than r_(i-1) km (r_0 =0) from the storm center. Missing data correspond to -1. The number of TRMM cells for which precipitation is averaged is given in the 5th column. For this record (no. 4568), number 1.672 in the first column, fifth row indicates that the mean 3-hour TRMM precipitation between 100 km and 125 km from the storm center was 1.672 mm/hour, with 26 cells used to calculate this average.
(The remaining columns are not relevant for this study but were used by Makarieva et al. 2017 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atmosres.2017.04.006. The 2nd column gives the mean TRMM precipitation (mm/hour) in the absence of storms, 3rd column is the mean MERRA water vapor content (mm), 4nd column is the mean MERRA water vapor content (mm) in the absence of storms, 6th column is the number of MERRA cells used to calculate water vapor content, 7th column is r_i (km).)
File pre-wv-int-new-04568.txt has the same structure, but it reports the mean TRMM precipitation (mm/hour) within the circle of radius r_i. For this record (no. 4568), number 1.899 in the first column, fifth row indicates that the mean 3-hour TRMM precipitation within 125 km from the storm center was 1.899 mm/hour.
statistics.txt reports all data used in this study.
