Sciorista assignatalis Pyrausta

Description

1097. Sciorista assignatalis (de Joannis, 1930: 704) (Pyrausta)

Type locality: Indonesia, Java

= Botys signatalis Walker, 1866a: 1444

Type locality: Indonesia, Java

= Pyrausta euryphaea Meyrick, 1932: 318 (unnecessary replacement name)

Distribution. Indian records: N. W. Himalayas, Nilgiris (Hampson 1896b), North India (Rose & Dhillon 1980c), Kerala (Mathew & Menon 1984), West and Central Himalaya (Sanyal et al. 2018), Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand (Pathania et al. 2021b). Global records: Ceylon, Java (Hampson 1896b), Nepal (Yamanaka 1995), Philippines (Kemal et al. 2019).

Remarks: Botys signatalis Walker, 1866a: 1444 is a secondary junior homonym of Rhodaria signatalis Walker, 1866a: 1282. The replacement name is Pyrausta assignatalis de Joannis, 1930. Meyrick (1930 –36) subsequently established an unnecessary replacement name P. euryphaea Meyrick, 1932. Furthermore, the illustration of Botys medullalis Snellen, 1899 (type locality: Indonesia, W Java) in Snellen (1899: pl. 8) shows that B. medullalis is clearly different from the North American R. signatalis Walker and it seems to have been synonymized with the wrong signatalis. Comparing Snellen’s (1899) plate 8, fig. 10 with Sciorista euryphaea (= B. signatalis Walker, 1866a: 1444) in Kemal et al. (2019: fig. 67), there are clear differences in the maculation between the specimens, ruling out conspecificity. Therefore, Botys medullalis Snellen, 1899 is reinstated to species status as Sciorista medullalis (Snellen, 1899), stat. rev., comb. nov.
