Rice Man of India: Contribution of M.S. Swaminathan to Indian Agriculture

Professor Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminthan, a visionary and Rice Man of India, revolutionised agricultural science and narrowed scientific knowledge and its practical application in agriculture. His pioneering research works in agriculture and specific sectors like high yielding varieties of wheat, rice, potato and breeding led to a tremendous increase in Wheat and Rice production and thus India turned from a food-deficient country into a self-sufficient nation in agriculture sector. This significant achievement and his contribution to Indian agriculture sector earned him the well-deserved title of “Father of Indian Green revolution’. He played a major role in the set of changes and reforms introduced in Indian farming in sixties and seventies that helped India combat food insecurity and achieving self-reliant in food and other crops development in agriculture sector as well as indirectly other sectors.
