Energy cascades in surface semi-geostrophic turbulence

Description

This dataset contains the Matlab figures, scripts, and .mat data files used in the paper "Energy cascades in surface semi-geostrophic turbulence" to be submitted to JGR-Oceans.

"Figures?.fig" are the matlab figures, where "?" is a integer varying from 1-9.

"Figures?.m" is the matlab script which loads the "Figure?.mat" data to create "Figure?.fig" figure.

Notes

The main results of this study can be summarized as:

  1. An asymmetry between cyclonic cold vortices and anticyclonic warm filaments characterizes the surface semi-geostrophic turbulence.
  2. The ageostrophic component strengthens the forward potential energy cascade by exciting warm filaments but suppresses the inverse kinetic energy cascade by preventing cyclone mergers.
  3. Horizontal diffusion transforms from a hyper-ballistic regime at small scales to a normal diffusion regime at large scales.
