Description

The presented item is an unusual ancient astronomical instrument. It consists of two circles with scales mounted horizontally. They are supported by three legs in the shape of paws. In the centre of the azimuth circle, there is a magnetic needle protected by glass. The horizon circle is mounted on an axis at the edge of the azimuth circle. There is an alidade with two - point and line - vanes attached to its centre. The instrument could be used to determine the location of an observed point in the horizontal and vertical planes and, thus, to carry out astronomical observations and geodetic measurements. **For more images and further information, visit:** https://muzea.malopolska.pl/en/objects-list/2788 Inventory number: 4065; 65/V Localisation of the physical object: Jagiellonian University Museum, Collegium Maius **Digitalisation: Regional Digitalisation Lab, Małopolska Institute of Culture in Kraków, Poland; "Virtual Museums of Małopolska" project** Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
