Medieval Archivolt 4
Description
Medieval archivolt of the thirteenth century belonging to the Portico
de Santiago, in the parish church of El Salvador (Cifuentes, Spain).
It corresponds to the left side of the arch where various diabolic
figures that represent vices and evil are located. These diabolical
figures torment and martyr some individuals, in a clear representation
of Hell and the future that awaits sinners. Since almost nobody knew
how to read in the Middle Ages, these images were used by the Church
for pedagogical purposes to convey its message.
