Concentric Circle Speaking Stone (07-026-001)
Description
This petroglyph boulder is located at the base of the mesa slope on the edge of an arroyo. It has 2 panels, one near ground level and the other above head height, each with concentric circle designs. Concentric circles on the ground level panel have had a head added, tranforming it into a shield-bearer motif. Both panels are on curved/parabolic/dish-shaped surfaces that noticably reflect sound, and the concentric circles on both utilize vesicular (sponge-textured) inclusions. If you look very closely while rotating the model, you might catch a glimpse of a third petroglyph element. This element, also a set of concentric circles, is fully repatinated, suggesting that prior to the Pueblo-period concentric-circle-shield-bearer earlier Archaic Period inhabitants also recognized the special acoustical properties of this boulder.
