Description

***"As soon as his shift finished, he lit up a cigarre. He smoked like a chimney."*** - This was a description of a former miner. The object displayed shows a cigar box. 70% of all miners smoked, although of course not within the mines. Yet, after the second World War, the cigarette industry was booming and cigars transformed into a luxury object, mostly used by the higher ranked miners, the deputies. On the box, the name **Albert Cuypmarkt** is written, which refers to the largest trade market of the Netherlands, located in Amsterdam in the quarter **De Pijp.** In the beginning of the 20th century, this quarter was famous for its criminality, poverty and prostitution. Furthermore, **Staatsmijnen 1902-1952** stands on the box - the peak of the cole mines in the Netherlands. **Gluck auf** is the usual greeting of the miners. Measurements: 4x23,5x11cm.
