Pouring a Libation with Attendants

A number of panels in the North Palace of Ashurbanipal (668–631 BC) were dedicated to the royal privilege of hunting lions. This panel originally formed part of one long scene, the lowest of three registers. Dead lions are brought in from the left, to the accompaniment of musicians. The tall stand holds incense. Nearby are offerings on a table, including a joint of meat. The king pours a libation of wine over the bodies of four lions, while behind him, attendants carry his weapons.
