Distribution: Central America; from central Guatemala, to northern Nicaragua to central Costa Rica, Atlantic and Pacific drainages; (Nicaragua) Ch, Ne (Pacific); 279–319 masl; Sec, Pot. Occurrence and conservation status: Nat; DD (2020), population trend stable. Literature: Carr & Giovannoli (1994: 110, as Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum —synonym; brief description, including information on distribution and ecology), Schmitter-Soto (2007: 49; detailed description, including illustrations and an identification key, and information on distribution, with a map, and ecology) and Bagley et al. (2017: 155; phylogeography and species delimitation, with information on distribution, including a map).
