Description

Balclutha curvata (Caldwell), Figs. 55–65

Balclutha flavescens is also similar to B. curvata. Specimens of B. curvata at USNM from Florida at Archbold Research Station, Highlands Co.and from Collier Co.(specific locality not stated)were confirmed here by comparison to the B. curvata type. The drawing of the aedeagus of B. curvata in the original description by C&M (1952, Fig. 39a 1) is mistaken. It does not match the type specimen and appears to be mistakenly drawn of a specimen of B. flavescens. Linnavuori’s (1959) drawing of B. curvata closely resembles the “ B. curvata ” figures of C&M (1952) (likely copied from C&M, furthering the error) and also resemble the figures of B. flavescens by Linnavuori (1959) and by Blocker (1967). Blocker (1967) illustrated the male genitalia of B. curvata but Blocker’s figures, especially of the aedeagus, differ somewhat from the holotype. The holotype, deposited at USNM, is illustrated here (Figs. 55–65) to help clarify this species.
