Chan Chich Figurine Head
Description
The ceramic figurine head was found within a dense artifact deposit in the northwestern corner of a Late Classic (AD 610-800) residential courtyard platform at the ancient Maya site of Chan Chich in northwestern Belize. This 9-centimeter-tall figurine fragment depicts the head of a woman elaborately adorned in large ear spools and a conical hat. Although most of the slip has eroded away, small traces of green paint are preserved in the incised lines of the ear spools.
