Description

Arctosa kalpiensis (Gajbe, 2004) comb. nov.

Fig. 3

Ocyale kalpiensis Gajbe, 2004: 29, figs 37–39 (subadult ♀).

Hippasosa kalpiensis: Sherwood 2022: 583 (transfer from Ocyale).

Type material. Holotype subadult ♀ from INDIA: Madhya Pradesh: Mandla: Narayanganj: Kalpi (22°54'N, 80°12'E; 580 m alt.), leg. U.A Gajbe, 15 June 1982, repository NZC-ZSI, Kolkata (no registration number specified), examined.

Description. For description of the subadult female, see Gajbe (2004).

Male. Unknown.

Notes. This species was described based on a single female specimen collected from Madhya Pradesh (Gajbe 2004). It was recently transferred to Hippasosa as a consequence of the resurrection of this genus from its synonymy with Ocyale (Sherwood 2022). Detailed examination of the type material of O. kalpiensis revealed that the holotype female is a subadult (Fig. 3A). The pre-epigyne of this species lacks the inverted T-shaped septum, which is present in the epigyne of Hippasosa species (Alderweireldt 1996: figs 4–11, 20–24), indicating the misplacement of this species in Hippasosa (see also Jocque et al. 2017). Instead, the pre-epigyne with a conspicuous atrium divided by a median septum as seen in A. cinerea supports an interim inclusion of this species in Arctosa (compare Fig. 3B with Buchar et al. 2006: fig. 25; Wang et al. 2012: fig. 12E). Based on these observations, we transfer H. kalpiensis to Arctosa.

The NZC-ZSI collection has one glass tube for this species, labelled as ‘holotype’ (no registration number specified) containing one subadult female specimen in fairly good condition. The same tube has a small glass vial containing the dissected genitalia (Fig. 3B–C).

Distribution. India (Madhya Pradesh, Gajbe 2004).
