Digital Transformation and Mediation in European Fine Art Museums: Shaping the Future of Cultural Heritage

This poster proposal explores the evolving role of digital technology as a mediator in European fine art museums, shedding light on the transformative journey of these cultural institutions. As museums have played diverse roles throughout history, from promoting civic pride to attracting tourism, they now face new challenges in democratizing access and engaging with individual visitors rather than demographic groups.

In recent decades, digital technology has emerged as a pivotal force reshaping the museum experience. With the advent of the third technological revolution in the 20th century, society witnessed a rapid shift in consumer behavior towards intensive use of digital devices and platforms. Recognizing this shift, museums began to harness digital technologies as powerful tools to reach diverse audiences effectively.

Common digital mediation approaches in European fine art museums include smartphone apps, multimedia guides, gamification, storytelling, artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality, and 3D reproductions. These technologies empower museums to engage visitors regardless of their backgrounds and preferences.

To gain insights into current trends, we conducted a comprehensive study of digital projects within European fine art museums. Our analysis provides a snapshot of the present landscape, revealing how museums are reshaping their policies, strategies, and missions. Critical questions arise about museums' responsiveness to audience needs, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and fostering interdisciplinary experiences to ensure cultural diversity and global engagement.

This poster presentation aims to foster discussions on the future of museums in the digital age, emphasizing the role of technology as a bridge between cultural heritage and contemporary society. We invite fellow researchers and practitioners to explore the dynamic interplay between digital mediation and European fine art museums, envisioning new possibilities for cultural preservation, education, and engagement.
