Description
Abstract: This research estimated the effect of ten explanatory variables that have impacted China's accelerated food imports of 19 trading partners from 2000 to 2014. To do that, an extended non-linear gravity model that includes economic, demographic, and geographic factors, as well as China's free trade agreements (FTAs) is used to analyze the country’s imports of its top five agri-food commodity groups. Results from the non-linear gravity estimations suggest that the ten factors all have varying but significant impacts on China’s agri-food imports. The agri-food imports to China are predicted to increase. We contribute to the literature as the first study using a non-linear Gravity model to examine the imports of the top five agri-food commodity groups into China (2000-2014).
