Description

Abstract

This study aims at determining and evaluating the antimicrobial activity of Zingiber officinale and Thymus vulgaris extracts and their combination. The antimicrobial effect of ginger, thyme and their associations were evaluated in vitro against 25 microbial strains using the disc diffusion and agar dilution methods. The results indicated that ginger and thyme extracts showed antimicrobial activity against all microorganisms tested. The highest activity was against Staphylococcus sp and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 15313 with significant inhibition zones greater than 35 mm (P-value = 0.0057) when thyme ethanolic extract was used. The minimum inhibitory concentration MIC of T. Vulgaris ethanolic extract against B. subtilis ATCC6631 was the lowest 0.145 mg/ml followed by the MIC of ginger ethanolic extract 100 mg/ml. The MIC of the combined extract was 122.5 mg/ ml against all strains. The effect of the combined extract of thyme and ginger TEGE shows high sensitivity (40mm) compared to those of antibiotics (≈25mm) towards E.coli ATCC11150. As for the antimycobacterial effect, our results showed that the thyme ethanolic extract had an efficient antimycobacterial effect. The pharmacologically active molecules of Thymus Vulgaris and ginger were identified by GC-MS.
