Protocluster assembly: observations and theory

In this review talk I give an overview of the theory of protocluster formation and assembly in terms of Lambda-CDM cosmology. I describe the implications of hierarchical and stochastic cluster assembly. I report on recent observations that illuminate the assembly of clusters, focussing on the distribution and velocity structure of protocluster galaxies, and the distribution of proto-intracluster medium.
