The geometry of grammatical meaning: Semantic maps and cross-linguistic comparison
Description
Grammatical forms often appear to have multiple functions or meanings, in a way that differs strikingly across languages, although there are also clear similarities. The semantic-map method has been proposed to summarize similarities and differences between languages in the way they code grammatical meanings, and this paper provides an authoritative overview of the method.
