Description

Xerocrassa ferrutxensis was described as a new species endemic of the north-east of the Mallorca island. The anatomical study of four specimens from the same area sharing the morphological traits of the species reveals large variability in genitalia anatomy. Morphology of the shell in the original description also lacked good comparisons with similar species, and here we demonstrate that shell pilosity is not a good diagnosis trait for this species. Thus, we conclude X. ferrutxensis should be considered just as a variation of X. homeyeri, which shows a huge variability in shell morphology as well as in the reproductive system.
