Interest in the toxic properties of depleted uranium is connected with its use for military purposes. This leads to the accumulation of uranium in certain territories and increases the exposure of the population and the environment. The planned use of shells with depleted uranium on the territory of Ukraine (in the center of Europe) stimulates the study of uranium toxicity and the development of possible measures for the preventive protection of military personnel and the civilian population, as well as the development of methods for cleaning up contaminated territories and water sources. Depleted uranium, despite its low radioactivity, as a typical heavy metal, poses a threat to human health. Neurotoxic, nephrotoxic and carcinogenic effects stand out among the main damaging factors. In order to reduce the harmful effects of depleted uranium, military personnel and the population must receive a sufficient amount of zinc, calcium and iron from food or in the form of trace elements, since the deficiency of these elements increases the absorption of uranium.

Сплеск інтересу до токсичних властивостей збідненого урану пов’язаний з до сить широким його використанням у військових цілях, що призводить до акумуляції урану на певних територіях та збільшує експозицію населення та навколишнього середовища. Заплановане використання снарядів з ЗУ на території України (у центрі Європи) стимулює дослідження токсичності урану та розробку можливих заходів превентивного захисту військовослужбовців та цивільного населення, а також роз робку методик очищення забруднених територій та джерел водопостачання. Збідне ний уран, на дивлячись на невисоку радіоактивність, як типовий важкий метал пред ставляє загрозу для здоров’я військовослужбовців та населення територій, на яких він використовується. Серед основних ушкоджуючих факторів виділяється нейроток сична, нефротоксична та канцерогенна дія. Військовослужбовці та населення для зменшення шкідливої дії збідненого урану повинні отримувати достатню кількість цинку та заліза з їжею або у вигляді мікроелементних препаратів, оскільки дефіцит цих елементів підвищує абсорбцію урану.
