Ileal heterotopic pancreas. A case report
Description
The presence of heterotopic pancreatic tissue in the lower intestinal tract is a rare condition that is mostly described incidentally in laparotomies. It has a high incidence of being present in stomach an duodenum, however it may appear in various parts of the gastrointestinal tract, with a very rare incidence of being present in ileum. We present the case report of an 80 year old female with a previous history of high blood pressure and a previous surgical intervention of a hysterectomy, that presented to the emergency department with hematochezia and diffuse abdominal pain, several hours after admittance she develops acute abdominal pain and melaena, an abdominal CT scan was performed in which we could point out inflammation of the mesentery in the lower left quadrant, a tumor like mass in small intestine and free fluid throughout the cavity.an exploratory laparotomy was performed finding hemoperitoneum and a small bowel tumor like mass 50cm near the ileocecal valve, a resection of the tumor and 75 cm of ileum was performed and a side to side mechanical anastomosis was performed, the specimen was sent to be examined by the pathology department. Histopathological report described presence of heterotopic pancreas in ileum classified as Heinrich type 2.
