Le Temple du Ouadi es-Seboua : Les implantations chrétiennes

  • 1. University of Warsaw

Description

Preliminary study on the Christian implantations in the Ramses II Temple of Wadi es-Sebua in Nubia. In the hypostyle hall of the temple, a church and baptistery had been installed while the pharaonic sanctuary had been changed into a chapel of Saint Peter.

The temple has been relocated in the 1960s, in the framework of the UNESCO programme to save temples and other monuments after the building of the second Aswan dam. During this operation, the church was demolished after the wall paintings had been taken from the walls by a Yugoslav team of restorers.

Therefore, a reconstruction of the church and its decoration, as well as graffiti and inscriptions, has to be done on the basis of historical documentation (19th century - early 20th century reports of travellers and scholars, their drawings and photographs.
