Description

This essay discusses some of the principles underlying the musical editions of the project European Ars Nova. Multilingual Poetry and Polyphonic Song in the Late Middle Ages, using as a case study the two-voice ballata by Francesco degli Organi (Landini) Va’ pure, Amor, e colle reti tue. The analysis of the varia lectio of the ballata, transmitted in five musical witnesses, is the starting point to provide some considerations on the possibilities opened up by digital edition techniques in relation to the fourteenth-century polyphonic repertoire.
