Description
The design and performance analysis of hydraulic turbines are two very critical aspects of any hydropower project to ensure the cost-effective operation of these plants. In this context, since the last decade, numerical fluid dynamics analysis of hydraulic turbines has been bringing revolutionary changes in this process. In recent years, advances in computing resources have made this work easier and more reliable, but it has also brought new challenges. Due to the lack of versatility and robustness, even today, it is worth discussing to appropriately use various models and numerical solutions in order to capture different fluid dynamics phenomena. This paper explains the various utility of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in simulating the operation of hydraulic turbines. In order to design new turbines and evaluate the performance of existing turbines, many real and virtual experiments must be performed. In order to carry out these experiments, a flow domain must be constructed, which can be a scale model for physical experiments or a virtual geometry for computational analysis.
