Modular database approach to manage a large set of STACK questions
Description
The manual insertion and updating of STACK questions as well as their prerequisite technical understanding form challenges to their widespread dissemination in STEM education.
This study presents a novel approach to producing, managing, and updating a large set of questions on the Moodle-integrated STACK-platform. The proposed method consists of semi-automatic compiling of questions using modular components (e.g. question text, variables, evaluation, feedback) database. This significantly reduces the workload required for mass-production and maintenance of STACK questions while maintaining alignment between the questions for the learner. The modular structure also enables easy expansion of the questions by inserting new modules, facilitating the adaptation of the questions to evolving educational needs.
A set of standardized, module-based question templates have been made to allow formulation of new questions with only limited knowledge of STACK. Similarly, XML based integration of SVG-graphics to the questions is straightforward and enables their effective parameterization.
The proposed method has been tested and validated with a large set of physics questions, demonstrating a significant reduction in workload and improvement in the quality and relevance of the questions. The use of modular structures and XML-code allows for greater flexibility and customization in the design of the questions. This makes it easier to tailor them to the specific needs of learners, while maintaining structural and visual similarity of the overall question pool.
Overall, this study contributes to the development of efficient ways of managing and updating large question banks on the STACK-platform. It provides a valuable framework for educators and instructional designers who seek to provide a low learning curve approach to extensive learning materials production.
