SOLVING HIDDEN HUNGER: CONTRIBUTIONS OF VARIOUS SECTORS – A Review

Description

Hidden hunger is a widespread problem in developing countries, characterized by a lack of essential vitamins and minerals in the diet, despite adequate calorie intake. The effects of hidden hunger are severe, including stunted growth, weakened immune systems, and increased risk of disease and death. The primary causes of hidden hunger include poverty, food insecurity, and a lack of access to diverse and nutritious foods. Reliance on staple crops can lead to a lack of essential nutrients in the diet. Governments and international organizations have implemented various interventions to address hidden hunger, including fortification of staple foods with micronutrients, dietary diversification programs, and targeted supplementation. However, these efforts have faced challenges such as limited access to fortified foods, lack of behavioral change communication, and inadequate monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem of hidden hunger, as supply chain disruptions and economic hardship have reduced access to nutritious foods. The pandemic has also highlighted the need for more resilient and sustainable food systems. To effectively address hidden hunger, it is crucial to address the underlying causes, including poverty and food insecurity. Interventions must be culturally appropriate and targeted to specific populations in need. In addition, the impact of these interventions must be closely monitored and evaluated to ensure their effectiveness. In this paper, we present a review of the multifaceted problems stemming from hidden hunger and solutions taken against these problems and their effectiveness.
