Description

Thrombosis is an aggravation that contributes to significant morbidity and mortality rates, being a serious
public health problem. The use of oral anticoagulants (OAC) is indicated to prevent this outcome. In this
sense, classical OAC can be administered as coumarin derivatives, however, direct OAC (DOACs), such as
dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban and edoxaban have been used in clinical practice in an efficient way.
Evidence supports the fact that DOACs present no therapeutic inferiority in relation to coumarin derivatives.
In addition, DOACs therapy has advantages over traditional coumarin derivatives. This study aimed to
perform a review of the scientific literature, with the intention of highlighting aspects related to OACs, such as
coumarin derivatives and DOACs in the management of thrombosis. This is a literature review, and the
compilation of the material was done based on electronic platforms, such as NCBI / PUBMED, SciELO,
Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, MEDLINE, and LILACS. The use of DOACs in place of coumarin
derivatives can bring many benefits to patients, avoiding adverse effects and the need for routine laboratory
monitoring. However, care with drug interactions and laboratory monitoring under specific clinical conditions
is extremely important for the success of this therapy.
