Authors/Creators

Description

The subject of the study is the structure and content of the European Green Deal (EGD) as a
strategy for decarbonization and transition to a climate–neutral economy in the European Union.
The purpose of the article is to determine key goals of economy transformation in EU countries
on the way of green transition and to characterize means of their achievement proposed under EGD.
Methodology. The article is based on the methods of retrospective and comparative analysis, the
systematic, historical, functional and structural–logical methods and a number of general scientific
research methods, such as methods of analysis, synthesis, induction and deduction, graphical
presentation of results, etc.
Results. The main blocks of tasks defined in European Green Deal, as well as planned indicators,
time and budget frameworks for the implementation of these tasks are analyzed. Basic principles
of EGD implementation are characterized. Tools and directions of the EU policies on the way to
achieving EGD goals are defined. The main areas of efforts to ensure decarbonization and transition to
a climate–neutral Europe by 2050 are considered, including energy efficiency, green energy, circular
economy, construction, transport, agriculture and food, etc. The legislative initiatives of the European
Commission designed to intensify EGD implementation are outlined.
Area of application. The results of this study can be used in preparation of information and analytical
materials on EU climate policy, and in the development of a national strategy for decarbonization in
Ukraine within the framework of its European integration aspirations.
Conclusions. At the current stage, the European Green Deal is the most ambitious and
comprehensive plan for overcoming global climate challenges, aiming at turning Europe into the first
region where GHGs emissions will not exceed their natural absorption by plants and oceans. The EGD
defines the EU as a global leader in promotion and implementation of ambitious policies in the field of
environment, climate and energy.
