The Rediscovery of a Lost Sestertius Type and the Dacian Embassy to the Roman Senate in AD 102

  • 1. Austrian Academy of Sciences

Description

In 2002, excavations at the ancient Roman settlement of Ferento (90 km north of Rome) yielded the only known specimen of a spectacular sestertius type of Trajan, minted in AD 102: it depicts the emperor, standing to the right and presenting a kneeling Dacian to the city-goddess Roma (enthroned to the left). The scene refers to a Dacian embassy to the Roman senate after the First Dacian War, attested in Cassius Dio (68.9.7-10.1).
