Rejtélyes rovarvilág a pécsi fügefákon Mysterious insect world on the fig trees of Pécs, SW Hungary

Authors/Creators

Description

The author has published three species of insects hitherto unknown in Hungary: Blastophaga psenes, Homotoma ficus Choreutis nemorana the species have colonized the southernmost mountain ranges of the country, the Mecsek and Villány. The populations are strong, and their numbers are high. The author observed Homotoma ficus (Linnaeus, 1758) larvae on several street and garden fig trees in the city of Pécs in southern Hungary at the end of May 2022. In the first week of June 2022, adults were already flying. This is the first observation of this species in Hungary, together with the first report of the family Homotomidae. Another remarkably interesting discovery was the record of the insect species Blastophaga psenes (Linnaeus,1758) (Hymenoptera) in the southernmost mountain range of Hungary, the Mecsek Mountains in 2010 It is unknown when B. psenes became colonized in southern Hungary. It is also possible that it was present much earlier, but nobody noticed it. The Choreutidae fauna of Hungary consists of 8 species. Choreutis nemorana is reported from Hungary for the first time. This adventive species is spreading rapidly in some parts of the country; before 2010 it was known from only a single locality. Added information is also given on a further thirteen localities which have been previously recorded here. The Pannonian region is an extra-limited range of species. Permanent populations are known to exist in suitable locations in Hungary in the Transdanubia Mountains and Mecsek Mountains area. However, following several favorable years other colonies may be established in these localities and in western and northern Hungary (for example in the Mátra- and Bükk Mountains). At present, the moth is only a minor pest in Hungary. The imago flies during in day but can also be collected with light at night. C. nemorana flies in two generations from April to mid-October, at altitudes from sea level to 200-400 m. The adult overwinter.
