Plot level results of the monitoring programme on strict forest reserves in Flanders (Belgium) – vegetation

Description

This dataset comprises vegetation data from the monitoring program on strict forest reserves in Flanders (Belgium). The collection and processing methodology for the data are described in Vandekerkhove et al., 2021.

The dataset includes data from 947 square plots of 16 x 16 m, distributed across 15 different forest reserves. The data covers one to three consecutive forest inventories conducted with a 10-year interval.

The "plotinfo.csv" file contains precise coordinates of the plot centres, forest reserve names, survey numbers, survey years, and other relevant variables. Detailed descriptions of these variables can be found in the "_metadata_plotinfo.xlsx" file.

The "vegetation_by_plot.csv" file provides data on a per-plot basis, including the number of species in the herb layer, cumulative coverage of all species in the herb layer, and total cover of the moss layer, herbaceous layer, shrub layer (2-8m height), and tree layer (> 8m height). Since 2015, the percentage of bare soil resulting from disturbance by game is also recorded.

The "herblayer_by_plot.csv" file contains per-plot data on the coverage of each vascular plant species estimated using the Londo scale. Data on browsing has been included since 2015.

For descriptions of the variables used in these files, please refer to the "_metadata_plotlevel_results_veg.xlsx" file.

For any inquiries or further information, please contact Kris.vandekerkhove@inbo.be or Anja.leyman@inbo.be.The provided csv-files will be updated if required to address any issues or include data from additional surveys. Please check for updated versions periodically.

Notes

Data was collected using Field-Map ™ software and hardware (www.fieldmap.cz; developed by IFER www.ifer.cz). For data processing, only R was used.
