Interpretation of A. Chekhov's Works by Means of Modern Choreography

The purpose of the research is to recreate the panorama and reveal the specificity of the «chekhovian», created by means of modern choreography. The research methodology consisted in the use of a complex of methods; in particular, the analysis of literature and sources, the stylistic and lexical features of the productions; the comparison of the ballet performances by different choreographers, and the systematization of the choreographic «chekhovian». The scientific novelty of the work lies in the finding that at the end of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century there was an expansion of the range of works that fell into the circle of choreographic interpretations, and systematization of the choreographic interpretations of A. Chekhov’s works by means of modern choreography, mainly in the aesthetics of postmodernity. Conclusions. Performances based on Chekhov’s works interpreted through the means of modern choreography are distinguished by a bright author’s style, which allows for active interpretation of Chekhov’s imagery and characters. In addition to the interpretations that clearly refer to the original source (K. Mcmillan’s «Winter Dreams» based on «Three Sisters», 1991; «Seagull» by D. Neumeier, 2002, and B. Eifrnan, 2007; «Ward No.6» by R. Poklitaru, 2005; «The Black Monk» by I. Reinholde, 2005), there were productions inspired by the common imagery of Chekhov’s works («The Endless Garden» by N. Duato, 2010; «The Whisper of Flowers» by Lin Khvaymin, 2010). In Ukraine, apart from the ballet «Chamber No. 6» by Radu Poklitaru, which has been part of the repertoire of «Kiev modern-ballet» for more than ten years, there was «Three Sisters», a musical and choreographic performance by M. Boichenko, which appeared at the end of 2015, where the artists, in reflection of modern theatrical tendencies, not only perform choreographic pas but also recite particular replicas of the play and use household plastique to reveal artistic images. The works by A. Chekhov provide unlimited opportunities for interpreting the psychological nuances of heroes through the means of choreography, which is relevant for modern dance.
