Description

The idea of freedom is one of the most important in the context of the development of civilization and is crucially topical nowadays. Freedom is viewed as a person’s ability to choose any option they want and presupposes the lack of any limitations. The aim is to investigate the portrayal of freedom in the texts of modern rock music. The article seeks to review the means of representation of freedom in the song Numb written by Chester Bennington, the vocalist of Linkin Park. Based on the analysis of the literary rock text and its translation into Ukrainian, the problem of the essence of freedom is considered.

It has been proven that rock music can be considered the music of freedom, and its texts depict the lyrical hero, who is allegedly trying to find their freedom in life. The concept of FREEDOM is revealed in C. Bennington’s rock text through the prism of unfreedom, through the conflict of parents and children. His lyrical hero discovers his own freedom via protest in relationships with the parents, and it becomes obvious, that the lyrical hero tries to find an opportunity to decide for themselves: how to live their life without the parental control.
