Description

The aim of the paper is to study the situation of uncertainty and spiritual unfreedom in E. Hemingway’s novel «The Sun Also Rises» («Fiesta»). The characters of the novel refuse to search for the meaning of existence. At the same time, they subconsciously strive to free themselves from the burden of meaninglessness. The main problems of the novel are expressed with the help of minimalistic style, based on the principle of iceberg. This is signified in the uncertainty of the situations, the characters, the author's position, «secret» psychologism, dialogical speech, syntactic repetitions and the reduction of traditional means of writing. An important role in the plot is played by the episodes related to corrida and in the part of the work where the trip to Spain for the Pamplona fiesta is described. It is there that the characters (mainly Jake Barnes) seem to get an opportunity to come back to life and regain a sense of freedom. During the fiesta in Pamplona, the true essence of each character is highlighted; the objective criteria of their spiritual quests «activate» when they directly encounter the «Higher Goals» of human life.
