Description

The article is dedicated to the actualization of the issue of women`s freedom and rights in the 19th–20th centuries. It is a case study of one of the secondary female characters of the novel The Lost Girl by the famous modernist writer, the creator of New Literature – David Herbert Lawrence. The issue about women`s freedom, security and rights became acute at the eve of the 19th and 20th centuries, precisely at the moment when the feminist movement was actively developing – the movement for the defense of women`s rights in society.

The purpose of the article is to study one of the female characters in the novel – Madame from the point of view of revealing the character as to the concept of freedom. Madame is one the most interesting characters presented in the novel. D.H. Lawrence portrays a free and strong-willed woman that is unusual for the society of the late 19th and early 20th. Even the name of the character in the text – “Madame” indicates her exalted position not only among women, but also among men.

The character, despite her unusual appearance and age, is depicted by the writer as a freedom-loving woman, despite the laws of the society to which she belongs. She takes care of her freedom, safety and rights, not allowing anyone, not even the men around her, to dominate her. On the contrary, she occupies a dominant position herself.
