Description

Slides presented in Association for Southeastern Biologists (ASB) Symposium: Supporting inclusive and sustainable research infrastructure for systematics (SISRIS) held on 30 March 2023 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Work to produce this talk and accompanying materials and workshops all funded by NSF grants #2247631 #2247632 and the support of the Illinois Natural History Survey and the Species File Group as members of the Prairie Research Institute.

The talk focuses on the underlying need for culture change in standards of practice and community expectations around capturing and using the data about people who collect and identify specimens. This work highlights the opportunities this work offers to bring credit, citation, attribution to individuals and organizations and recognition of the the values inherent the collections people create. Additionally, we highlight opportunities for novel discoveries about who (and what) you have in common with other collections and who (and what) makes your collections unique and how you can use this information to support advocating for this work, locally and globally.
