Description

After the end of the Greek civil war, the dominant state apparatuses and other sovereign institutions attempted to expand their victory in the war to the realm of ideas. One aspect of this effort is the plethora of monuments throughout the Greek territory, with direct or indirect reference to the National Resistance Movement and the Greek Civil War. One such case is the monument in Kefalovriso, a village inhabited by Vlachs and located very close to the Albanian borders, in the prefecture of Ioannina. Each time the dominant historical memory rhetoric is transformed, the monument itself was being transformed or moved. It therefore appears as an interesting ethnographic example of the manner in which space and symbols affect the collective memory and collective identity and vice versa.
