Description

ARTEMIS aims at developing an integrated framework coupling urban metabolism and life-cycle assessment, to estimate how strategies implemented in EU-funded smart city have affected a wide set of environmental impacts, associated with urban systems. This report summarizes the Urban Metabolism (UM) modelling work performed within project, including the materials and methods applied (e.g., data collection and processing) and main results. The UM modelling work is directly linked and required to fulfil the project’s specific objectives, in particular those of work package 1 (WP1), as outlined in the project proposal: to quantify the material and product flows associated with urban systems before & after the implementation of smart city strategies.

The report is structured as follows: section 2 provides the background, including main methodological concepts, such us urban metabolism, the integration of material flow accounting and life-cycle assessment to assess environmental impacts associated with urban areas, and the UM model; section 3 provides a brief description of the case study area (Trento); section 4 describes the materials and methods applied in the UM model; section 5 presents and discusses the results; section 6 provides concluding remarks, including model limitations and improvement opportunities.
